Summer of 2009 saw the SO Festival visit the seaside town of Skegness.

The SO Festival started off with a big top being erected on Tower Gardens playing field. Two performances played, a 1940s style Berlin show with Mary Carewe and Sinfonia ViVA (East Midlands based orchestra) and an alternative comedy led by Mitch Benn, with Steve Hall, Alistair Barrie and Ray Peacock.

I personally didn’t see either of these performances since the 1940’s show isn’t my type of thing and the comedy show scheduled for 10pm, well I’m a mother with 2 young teens so it was a no go from the start for us, so on the first night I dumped the SO Festival and went to see the Chicago Blues Brothers at the Embassy Theatre with my kids instead (had a great night out).

Chicago Blues Brothers show is fun for the whole family. I loved the fact that some people went to the show with the Blues Brother hats and dark sunglasses. I thought I wasn’t really into Blues and Motown music, it’s a little before my time, but apparently I am, we had a great evening. Both me and the kids knew the music quite well and even the stuff we didn’t recognise still got us moving.

A few of our favourite songs were Minnie the Moocher, Flip Flop Fly, Respect by Aretha Franklin, Every Body Needs Somebody, Raw Hide and Keep on Lifting me Higher and Higher. A few of these songs had audience participation which was fun.

As a family (Mum, Dad and two sons) we’ve been to LaserQuest at Skegness Pier just once, this is because I (Dad) have a bad back (just had an operation to fuse a couple of discs as it happens) so regular Laser Quest games for the entire family wasn’t an option

If it was, I’d go to LaserQuest at least once a fortnight, as a Dad with two teenage (almost teenage for the youngest) sons, the idea of running around with a gun shooting my kids is VERY appealing

When we went as a family I was only able to play one game (back hurt too much), but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I forget who won (LOL), but we all went home checking our LaserQuest game score printout to see who’d done what and making excuses as to why we’d got shot so many times in the back!

My youngest son and I went to see route 66 at the Embassy Theater in Skegness. Route 66 started with the roar of a Harley Davidson which adorned the stage the band exploded into born to be wild and the show began. We had a great time watching an astounding show.

We’ve been to see shows like Route 66 with a similar line up of songs from the same era, one that jumps to mind was That’ll Be The Day that claims to have songs from the 80’s my decade or there about’s, but the songs from the 80’s where far and few between. It was all older songs from the 50’s and 60’s we’d never even heard of which made me feel left out and thoroughly disappointed.

We went to see The Cirque De Glace Ice show at the Embassy Theater, Skegness in June 2009.

The Cirque De Glace Ice show is pure dynamite, a phenomenal theater experience, it is just divine. We guarantee you will see a circus performance on ice like no other, do not deny yourself the pleasure of seeing the Cirque De Glace Ice Show it’s staggering.

Wild Roses are a spectacular ice skating troupe from Russia, we have been to see several of their ice shows at the Embassy Theater, Skegness each one has been a spectacle to watch full of amazing skill and exceptional skating talent, but Cirque De Glace went one step further including some jaw dropping circus skills all portrayed on thin ice.

The 1st thing I have to tell you about Songs Of Sister Act is it’s not the official Sister Act The Musical that is in the west end of London. This is a independent production, it doesn’t have any acting in the show it doesn’t follow the story of the Sister Act film it is purely the music and songs that was in the film nothing else.

I tell you this because in the crowd at the Embassy Theater a lot of people including a lady I was sat next to and he coach group thought Songs Of Sister Act was a show like the movies, and although she was enjoying herself she was a little disappointed.

Songs Of Sister Act stars Rowetta, someone from the British x-factor show. I’ve never heard of her since I don’t watch X-Factor, I found her voice to be a bit to low it wasn’t bad just her singing talent didn’t suit the Songs Of Sister Act her range was a little to low and deep.

My wife and I have home educated our three sons since birth, that means they have never attended a school, grammar school or otherwise. When we moved to Skegness our eldest son was 15 1/2 years old and doing well in his education: he’s gifted in many areas and finds learning very easy.

He’d been studying from A-Level texts (Mathematics for example) for years and where we moved from we’d arranged to do GCSE’s as an external candidate at a local comprehensive school, but that was no longer an option, so doing GCSE’s fell by the way side (wrong time to move).

With no GCSE’s The Skegness Grammar School which specializes in Maths and Computing (what our eldest son was studying) would not even consider him as an A-Level candidate. The other Skegness comprehensive school in the area St Clements College Skegness isn’t considered a good school (it failed and was closed) and does not offer the A-Levels he required (A-Level Mathematics, A-Level Further Mathematics and A-Level Physics, offered NONE of these!) and so St Clements College wasn’t a realistic option.

Our 5/10 star rating for That’ll Be The Day was solely for the Christmas part of the show not the That’ll Be The Day show as a hole.

That’ll Be The Day Christmas Special has been difficult for me to review. Some bits I liked, but the structure of the show was disappointing.

That’ll Be The Day is basically an older persons show, although I was born in 1975 a lot of the music I didn’t even know. I thought the songs would have mainly been all time favorites, that everyone knows no matter when you were born. Especially on this occasion, since it was the Christmas special and a lot of young children were there.

The old folks in the audience got to have a good singalong to tune’s we didn’t know, from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. I found it frustrating that when they did sing a song from a band we all know and are proud to love like the Beatles or Elvis they sang songs I hadn’t even heard of.

Just a quick review of Vampires Rock 2008 since we went to Vampires Rock 2007 at the Skegness Embassy theater, so read the 2007 review in conjunction with this review of Vampires Rock 2008.

Also my husbands going to see Vampires Rock at the Embassy for the 1st time with us in 2009, (his back should be much better by then) so I want to write a detailed review on Vampires Rock 2009 with him.

Vampires Rock 2008 Review

There was a little change to the show in 2008 compared to 2007, Toyah Willcox now stars as the Demon Queen and is touring with Vampires Rock again in 2009, yeah!!! Toyah Willcox makes a wicked (pardon the pun ) Demon Queen, her evil laugh was brilliant. The story of Vampires Rock has changed and now follows the lines of Baron Von Rockular still in search for a new vampire bride, but he already has a Demon Queen, Baron Von Rockular 1st and still current wife as you can imagine is not a very happy vampire Mrs when she finds out what Steve Steinman’s character is up to.

Spirit Of The Dance is an Irish dance show, before we went we had never been to see Irish dancing, in fact the only Irish dance production I had ever heard of was River Dance with Michael Flatley.

I had no feelings towards Irish dancing either way, but I have caught the theater bug big time and was feeling withdrawal symptoms, I hadn’t had my show fix for a few months So this was an interesting experiment for me and my 12 year old son to go see a show at the Skegness Embassy Theater we wouldn’t normally go to see.

Spirit Of The Dance isn’t a theater production just about Irish dancing it also has other dance forms like flamenco dancing, tap dancing and waltz, the show is choreographed very well and there’s some great dance sequences.

The word ballet in the Big Ballet is a little misleading there isn’t that much ballet in The Big Ballet show, only about 30 minutes of the two hour show is ballet. There was many dance forms in the show from disco to belly dancing.

I like my theater to be a little different and the Big Ballet sparked my interest, it sounded fun so since it said it was a family show I took my youngest son (11 years old). I thought The Big Ballet was going to be a comedy ballet.

The very short first half was ballet and we didn’t think much to the 1st half, if the entire show had been ballet it would have been boring, thankfully the 1st half only lasted 30ish minutes then there’s an interval before the much better second half.

I might have found my Achilles heel in theater shows it could be musicals,
Annie just didn’t do that much for me

I remember watching the film Annie when I was a kid in the 80’s and I really liked it, so when I saw that Annie was coming to the Embassy Theater in Skegness I didn’t hesitate to buy the tickets.

It never even crossed my mind that I wasn’t going to like Annie, it was a total surprise to me.

I’ve been known to sit through musical theater and musical films in the cinema.

I went to the Embassy in 2007 to watch Little Shop Of Horrors that was produced by a local drama group from Skegness and both me and my kids like this musical production and for musical films. Like I said I liked Annie and I loved Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd and I absolutely adore Disney cartoons, they always have singing in them, but the theater production of Annie I didn’t enjoy.
